This blog considers how transportation and mobility play a critical role in people's lives across Metro Vancouver, and how they contribute towards a future where everyone has access to the jobs and services that make for meaningful, healthy and sustainable communities. Spatial analysis and mapping are powerful tools that can help tell these stories.

It also considers the role of public sector processes and governance to support decision making and actions towards this future.

About Me

I am a transportation planner and engineer with 25 years experience across the UK and Canada. I have worked in both the public and private sectors, including nine years at the City of Vancouver, one of which as Acting Associate Director of Transportation Planning.

I believe that a good transportation system enables more people to access more services and destinations in a sustainable, equitable and healthy way. More than that, I believe transportation can help foster community and bring people together, whether that’s literally by bringing them to the same place, or by creating streets and spaces that encourage community and connection, not just movement.

As a child I spent many hours staring at atlases, only able to imagine what certain places and countries must be like. As a teenager I spent far too many hours playing SimCity, creating the perfect metropolis, only to destroy it through fire or flood and then rebuild it again. This naturally led to a love for geography, which is what I went to university to study. I followed that up with a Masters in Integrated Environmental Studies, which first introduced me to transportation planning. I got my first job working for what was then WS Atkins in Winchester, UK.
